Calamity assistance in hardest-hit areas in Sorsogon of Typhoon Tisoy benefits 3,840
Sorsogon City – As of January 27, 2020, the OWWA RWO5 has extended cash relief assistance to 3,840 OFWs and their dependents that were severely affected by the wrath of Typhoon Tisoy in the Province of Sorsogon. Per record of OWWA Central Office, the total number of active OFW – OWWA members who will benefit for the program summed up to 5,010 for the 15 municipalities yet the number of OFWs that were processed totaled to 5,040 aspiring claimants. There were about 1, 200 applicants who were not able to qualify for the program. Some have inactive status of membership while others are no longer residents of the province.
The Welfare Assistance Program – Calamity is financial assistance amounting to P3, 000.00 for qualified recipients. To qualify for the program, the OFW must have an active membership status and must be a resident in one of the municipalities of Sorsogon.
To be an active member entails that an OFW‘s latest contribution is still within the two – year validity period on December 3, 2019, the declaration of the state of calamity in the Sorsogon Province.
For those OFWs who are still working overseas, the immediate families who may claim for the cash assistance on their behalf are their spouse, children and parent of single OFW.
OWWA personnel from the OWWA Regional Welfare office headed by Henry I. Miraflor, OIC Regional Director facilitates the release of the cash assistance as it kicked – off on January 7, 2020 in Pilar Sorsogon Gymnasium with the active participation of Mayor Carolyn Sy – Reyes and PESO Manager Annie L. Perete.
The subsequent schedules and venues were done in the Provincial Capitol Lobby, Sorsogon City in partnership with the Provincial Government of Sorsogon led by Governor Francis Escudero through her Provincial PESO Manager, Elsie Toca for the municipalities of Casiguran, Bulusan, Juban, Prieto Diaz, Barcelona, Magallanes, Gubat and Sorsogon City. OWWA RWO5 partnered with LGU Irosin through the efforts of Mayor Alfredo J. Cielo and his PESO Manager Judith O. Baesan to let the OFWs from the municipalities of Irosin, Bulan, Matnog and Sta. Magdalena gathered in Irosin Gymnasium. It was the most favorable area for the qualified recipients coming from the four municipalities on the latter
OWWA RWO 5 is now preparing for the cash relief distribution in the province of Albay which will kick off on February 10, 2020.
